The Reader In-between...

 For all the reading teachers out there, I'm sure you can relate to this question...  What happens to the reader in-between? Teaching young readers is full of challenges, such as balancing phonics instruction with comprehension, transferring ideas to writing, and introducing vocabulary and grammar. One issue I often witness is my readers who have graduated from simple picture books with basic plots and characters are not yet ready for full chapter books... which often leads them to empty-choice shelves.  I wouldn't exactly call my learning experience today a "discovery," as that indicates something new and revelational, however I was exposed to information I did know on a deeper level.  For my podcast choice today I selected Scholastic's July 18, 2019 Growing Readers with Branches and Acorn . Be a Mirror and a Window

  Welcome back after two weeks of special posts for very special events! I hope you had an amazing Teacher Appreciation Week. We know that showing respect and appreciation for educators is beyond a "one-week" event. In the spirit of appreciating each other, I thought about our profession thoughtfully and found that I view our roles as two different things: mirrors and windows. So let's think about ourselves from both a mirror and a window. Pause reading for a minute and think about what those terms mean to you. What words come to mind? Which one do you resonate with, and which one do you think you mimic How can we be both a window and a mirror? As educators, we are very often a mirror for our students. I feel we naturally fell into this role when we chose to be a teacher. We show them what they are doing right, and where they made their mistakes. We model for them what our expectations are, and how to accomplish the challenging tasks that teach us the most.  Students see ...

New Year, New Lens on Writing Workshop: Part 2- Literacy Workshop Crossover

 As our school year progresses, I feel more in the groove with starting Writing Workshop. This is my celebration moment because even though I'm a veteran teacher, I too get nervous about starting new curriculum, programs, methods, etc. I'm finding what lessons work well, what mentor texts I want to use, and, above all, I'm connecting writing to reading.  Over the summer I listened to a Stenhouse Teacher's Corner Podcast from Season 2: Streamline Your Instruction with The Literacy Workshop.  Of course I listened to this podcast before I began Writing Workshop, but now as I work through it, it makes sense.  Like every other teacher, I only have certain allotted time to teach both reading and writing, and it's often hard to fit in all aspects of both models.
