The Reader In-between...

 For all the reading teachers out there, I'm sure you can relate to this question...  What happens to the reader in-between? Teaching young readers is full of challenges, such as balancing phonics instruction with comprehension, transferring ideas to writing, and introducing vocabulary and grammar. One issue I often witness is my readers who have graduated from simple picture books with basic plots and characters are not yet ready for full chapter books... which often leads them to empty-choice shelves.  I wouldn't exactly call my learning experience today a "discovery," as that indicates something new and revelational, however I was exposed to information I did know on a deeper level.  For my podcast choice today I selected Scholastic's July 18, 2019 Growing Readers with Branches and Acorn . New Beginnings for Old Adventures

Starting to work again on a curriculum set for Differentiated Instruction for KDP University. My friend and fellow Kadelpian and I have teamed up to work together and share our knowledge and passion for the topic, while embarking on a journey of writing a curriculum set for the very first time.  I'm eager to continue exploring my writing and publishing on various topics in education, so hopefully this will be a success for us.  Admittedly we had to shelve the material for a while due to other commitments and time constraints, but now we are energized and ready to strike the match under our work again.  When laying the groundwork, there are many things that worry me about the process, such as resources, and just like differentiated instruction for students should meet all of their learning needs, I wish to meet the needs for all the teachers that will view our course.  Feeling inspired, anxious, and motivated.  Let's keep moving!

New Year, New Lens on Writing Workshop: Part 2- Literacy Workshop Crossover

 As our school year progresses, I feel more in the groove with starting Writing Workshop. This is my celebration moment because even though I'm a veteran teacher, I too get nervous about starting new curriculum, programs, methods, etc. I'm finding what lessons work well, what mentor texts I want to use, and, above all, I'm connecting writing to reading.  Over the summer I listened to a Stenhouse Teacher's Corner Podcast from Season 2: Streamline Your Instruction with The Literacy Workshop.  Of course I listened to this podcast before I began Writing Workshop, but now as I work through it, it makes sense.  Like every other teacher, I only have certain allotted time to teach both reading and writing, and it's often hard to fit in all aspects of both models.
